Think of a Card Don Lewin

When East Ender Don Lewin answered an ad to sell greeting cards from the back of his car, he had no idea what he was getting into. He opened his first card shop in Epping in 1968, only to be told he’d be bankrupt within weeks. Forty years on, he presides over more than 1,000 shops!  The son of a chimney sweep, Don grew up in the shadow of the war. Leaving school at 15 to work on a building site, Don soon realised he had a knack for selling. After National Service, he sold brushes door-to-door before becoming a tallyman. However, Don always had an eye for the bigger picture.  This inspiring and entertaining book provides an enthralling insight into the man and his struggle to establish the company which is now a household name.

Written with the assistance of Michael Oke, founder and director of Bound Biographies, this is the latest specialist project from our team.

Looking for the Silver Lining Martin Barraclough

This is a fascinating story of British family ship-owning - the owners, the seafarers, the ships and their businesses. It starts in 1875 when Thomas Barraclough of West Hartlepool entered into partnership with the Webster family who owned the West Hartlepool Steam Navigation Company.  When the line was sold he formed the partnership of Webster and Barraclough to own and operate tramp ships until the middle of the First World War.  The story continues with the history of Dene Shipping which was started in 1929 by the sons of West Hartlepool ship-owners and was latterly controlled by two of Thomas's sons, Henry and Willie Barraclough.  The history gives a graphic account of ship-owning in the 1960s and 1970s and is illustrated with over 150 photographs of owners, ships, masters, chief engineers and employees as well as ships' plans and a liberal sprinkling of sea-faring anecdotes. The appendix lists the details of 165 ships either owned or managed by the companies involved.
